Out and About: Renaissance Astology
I was going to open this post with a long bit about summer fashion, flip-flops, blah, blah, blah. But instead, I will just implore you to LOOK AT THIS AWESOME ASTROLOGY SHIRT.
For those who need some direction, it’s being worn by the mannequin in the middle. Specifically, you’ll notice that it’s wearing Athanasius Kircher’s map of the zodiac! OMG!
What is interesting is how this shirt seems to fit into a larger “California-themed” display. Are they implying that astrology is just another wacky California fad, like coconut water and quartz crystals? Perhaps this fashion-house is trying to advance a message of astrological transcendence: that one can unlock the secrets of the universe with a beach-ready look that includes a comprehensive knowledge of planetary emanations as filtered through the zodiac.
Astute readers know that I have a soft spot in my heart for astrology. I must confess, this window display went from “Oh, that’s interesting” to “I’ll take four, please” in about 30 minutes. Since then, I’ve noticed a slew of esoteric themed tees on the streets of Toronto, with tarot cards seemingly also a fashion favourite. Either way, this shirt makes it easy to find out a potential mate’s sign without sounding too cheesy, so I give it two Gemini twins up.
